FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern softball team picked up a pair of wins over the Barry Buccaneers on Friday night, earning one Sunshine State Conference win. The Sharks edged the Bucs, 4-3, in game one before toppling the visitors, 11-3, in just five innings in game two.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP (GAME ONE):

HOW IT HAPPENED:
BOTTOM 1ST | With two outs on the board and
Sam Sisco on second, a throwing error by the Bucs allowed batter
Tia Williams to reach and advance to second while Sisco moved to third. Three batters later,
Madison Fine singled through the right side to score both Sisco and Williams for a 2-0 Shark edge.
TOP 2ND | The Bucs responded in the top of the second as a Shark error and a double steal caught the Sharks off guard, tying the game at 2-2.
BOTTOM 3RD | NSU pulled out in front again in the third as an RBI-double to left by Fine scored Williams, who led the inning off getting hit by a pitch.
BOTTOM 4TH | The Sharks tallied their last run of the game in the fourth as an RBI-bunt single by
Alexis Smith scored
Ryleigh Langwell who was waiting for the opportunity to score at third.
TOP 7TH | Barry attempted a comeback in the top of the seventh with an RBI-single by Michelle Roldan, scoring one to make it 4-3, but ultimately fell short to make this the final score.
INSIDE THE STATS:
- Fine finished the game 2-for-3 with three RBI while Sisco was 2-for-4 and scored once.
- Smith was 1-for-4 with one RBI.
- Hess picked up the win, tossing the full game and allowing three runs (0 ER) on eight hits with four strikeouts.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- Fine's three RBI are a career-high.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
TOP 1ST | The Buccaneers struck first in game two, scoring two runs off an RBI-sing by Michelle Roldan.
BOTTOM 1ST | With two outs and Williams on third, a wild pitch allowed her to score to cut Barry's lead to just one run, 2-1.
BOTTOM 2ND | The Sharks took control in the bottom half of the second as an RBI-single by Smith brought home
Samantha Burke and
Juliana Speranza to give NSU its first lead of the game, 3-2. Two batters later,
Kerstyn Shaw single to center field, scoring Sisco for a 4-2 edge. After a walk drawn by
Allie Janowiak, an RBI-single by Fine allowed Smith to score to make it 5-2 in NSU's favor.
TOP 3RD | The Bucs tallied their final run of the game in the third as a fielder's choice allowed Maggie Wheless to score, cutting NSU's lead to two at 5-3.
BOTTOM 3RD | With the bases loaded with Burke, Sisco and Smith, an RBI-ground out by Williams scored Burke before an RBI-single by Shaw brought home Sisco to give Nova Southeastern a 7-3 advantage.
BOTTOM 4TH | The Sharks exploded in the fourth inning for four runs on four hits. After reaching on an error by Barry, Fine was brought home on a home run over the right field fence by Speranza, making it a 9-3 game in favor of the Sharks. The next batter, Burke, singled to left field and after a BU pitching change, a ground out by
Mayte Lezcano and a Sisco double advanced her to third, Burke scored on an RBI-single by Smith to push NSU to double digits at 10-3. NSU was able to load up the bases and scored their final run as Janowiak was hit by a pitch to bring home Smith for the 11-3 mercy rule winning score.
INSIDE THE STATS:
- The Panthers outhit the Sharks 11-6.
- Smith went 2-for-3 with three RBI and scored once while Speranza was 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.
- Sisco was also 2-for-3 and Burke was 2-for-2, both scoring three times.
- Shaw finished 2-for-2 with two RBI and two walks drawn and Fine was 1-for-4, scoring once with one RBI to her name.
- Hess earned her second win of the day, entering in relief to pitch the final 4.1 innings, allowing one run (0 ER) on four hits with three strikeouts.
- Mikayla Johnson started the game, pitching 0.2 innings and giving up two runs on two hits.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- Smith's three RBI are a career-high.
- Speranza's home run in the fourth was the second of her career.
